November 20: A Place to Call My Own
In my own little corner, In my own little chair, I can be whatever I want to be…
And that is how I view my nook.
I am an introvert by nature, but a stay-at-home mom to three children does not often find time for herself. If I ever had the luxury to sneak away, it was usually to take a bath. That time was short-lived, however, when there would invariably be the knock at the door wondering when I might be done.
The children are grown now, and we are experiencing the
glorious empty-nest phase of life. Originally I adopted the dormer room as my reading library. We purchased a couple of cheap bookshelves and used a hand-me-down sofa as a place to sit. It was a slice of peace and quiet in my chaotic teaching world.
But one year for Christmas my husband gave me the gift of a room renovation. We added more shelves, brought in a couple of tables, and gathered my craft supplies from all over the house to keep in this one place. The space is a bit more crowded, but it is MY space. I can read and write, I can scrapbook and stamp, or I can just sit. It is my private retreat, and in this one corner of the house I can indeed be me.
So I am grateful for space – I am grateful for privacy – and I am grateful for a husband who appreciates the needs of his introverted wife.
